In July 2025 our Lions Club donated $500 to “The Friends of Mooball Native Plant Group”, who are beautifying a section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, a major tourist attraction that runs between Murwillumbah and Crabbes Creek. Group members are native plant enthusiasts who volunteer to plant out and maintain the Mooball section of the trail. Brigid Madden and Lynn McCulloch Reid, who established the group at the start of 2023, select native plants from all over Australia and choose them primarily based on what will grow well at the site based on climate and soil type.
They choose plants for their hardiness so irrigation isn’t a problem once the plants are established. They only have to do initial watering in the establishment phase but once they are all well-established there’s no need.
They have plans to extend the garden over time. From the current location on the north eastern corner of the Pottsville Road/Tweed Valley Way intersection, they’d love to beautify both sides of the intersection & the picnic area. They’re looking for more volunteers who would be willing to help with plantings and weeding from time to time.
Following the planting with plants bought from our donation Lions Club president Bill Brodie met with Brigid and Lyn to inspect the garden and install a plaque recognising our Club’s contribution.
